TEACHING
Piano, Voice and Music Theory Lessons, Vocal Coaching and Audition Prep Sessions

I have 10 years of teaching experience, having taught privately in Birmingham and Newcastle. I have 5 years experience working  in schools across the region delivering weekly Piano and Voice lessons through Birmingham Music Service. I studied Music Education as part of my undergraduate degree. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for the Creative Industries. I work with students of all abilities and levels of experience, from beginner keyboard to diploma level piano. As a vocal coach I currently work with students from beginner to post-Grade 8 level, and regularly teach LAMDA and Trinity Musical Theatre exams. I have worked with West End and Touring musical theatre performers, and can offer audition and showreel preparation sessions.

I’m really passionate about music education and in creating a path together that motivates and inspires my students to progress. This means finding repertoire and pieces that my students enjoy playing and want to learn, alongside technical work- I currently have students working on a wide range of different things- from John Legend songs to Minecraft theme music.

My vocal teaching covers the mechanics of breathing, posture and classical and CCM techniques, all of which can be studied and applied to different vocal styles. My approach will enable you to increase confidence in your voice as we progress towards achieving your goals. I currently teach students learning a wide range of repertoire including popular song, folk, musical theatre and classical ABRSM Grades. I also teach music theory grades and have experience supporting students with GCSE projects.

Joe is a great music teacher. My goal was to improve in a variety of singing genres and with Joe's help I feel that I have managed to develop my singing abilities skills far more than I ever expected to. Not only is he an approachable and motivating teacher, but he also has an in depth knowledge of technique and musical theory which helped to push my ability to the next level. I am now on the way to completing my Grade 8 singing exam and I feel confident and capable due to Joe's excellent guidance
Amber Broekhuizen, Birmingham

I initially felt shy about being a beginner, but Joe is a fantastic and encouraging teacher. He’s been really adaptable during lockdown and I’ve continued having fun and high quality lessons over video call. I can definitely feel the progress I’ve made.
Celina Fleming, University of Birmingham

Joe gave my daughter piano lessons at the start of lockdown. He was able to teach effectively via video call. He is patient and encouraging. He gave her fun pieces to do within her ability range while still keeping her Grade 2 skills in the hope she’ll be able to sit the exam before the year ends. Thank you very much, Joe.
